Fiasco: Project Z!

mortistonBefore moving on the next Actual Play series in our queue, Erik sits down with three of the Project Z players for a friendly game of Fiasco set in Mortiston during the events of the campaign.  The game is a zombie apocalypse scenario set in an isolated town in southern Colorado. We recommend you listen to the previous Actual Play episodes before enjoying this one, but it isn’t strictly necessary.  Fiasco is a sort of improv RPG in which players take turns establishing scenes that build an unnecessarily complicated set of relationships into a miasma of conflict and despair from which – in the midst of the zombie apocalypse – you can easily surmise that not everyone escapes intact.  Most of the group is new to Fiasco, so much of the setup and instructional material remains in the recording for listeners interested in learning how the game plays out.  We will also be posting a copy of the After Z-Day: The Zombie Apocalypse in Mortiston USA! playset for listeners interested in trying it out.

Project Z Chapter 1 Recap

tabletalkAt long last, Erik and the players sit down to discuss the story thus far and their thoughts regarding the first section of the campaign.  Complete with anecdotes, clips, and speculation about the future, the group analyzes the online play experience and offers insight into their dynamic and often unwieldy characters.  The recording also includes a discussion of the lost episode, session 4.  Project Z is a zombie apocalypse scenario set in an isolated town in southern Colorado. We strongly recommend you listen to the previous Actual Play episodes in the series before enjoying this one.

During the heavily-anticipated seventh session – the final session of Chapter One – our PCs stumble back into formation to face the zombie horde that’s attempting to push its way across the river, into the last bastion of safety in all of Mortiston…. The system is Savage Worlds. For GMs who are interested in running a similar scenario, we used the Welcome to Mortiston, USA! setting product from Scrying Eye Games. During the sixth session, our PCs finally decide to make their way south in an attempt to cross the river and ultimately reach Gaiten Academy.  The governor is missing, however, and the streets are still very dangerous in the early morning gloom.  And of course, crossing the river won’t be as easy as they’d prefer… The system is Savage Worlds. Due to a technical misfire, the fourth episode of this series was actually lost.  Fortunately, little in the way of story development occurred during this session, and I took a moment to explain the relevant details at the start of the recording.  During the fifth session, our PCs finally encounter a small horde of zombies, as well as an enormous beast that may or may not have begun as something human… The system is Savage Worlds. For GMs who are interested in running a similar scenario, we used the Welcome to Mortiston, USA! setting product from Scrying Eye Games. If you are interested in online gaming with Savage Worlds, you might also consider Google Hangouts and Tabletop Forge (now Roll20!).

During the third session, our PCs approach the pharmacy where a vicious biker gang called the Pythons is currently holed up. This recording is the second part of the session, during which the heroes take on a dangerous biker gang holed up in the local pharmacy, which has the medical supplies they so desperately need… The system is Savage Worlds. As none of the players have any prior experience with the system or with gaming via videoconferencing, some of the recorded material includes details about system mechanics and the occasional challenge associated with the medium. For GMs who are interested in running a similar scenario, we used the Welcome to Mortiston, USA! setting product from Scrying Eye Games.
